Stephen Harris Rosen 1938 – 2017 Stephen Harris Rosen, 78, died August 15, 2017. Optimistic to the end, he lost his battle with lung cancer at home. A private memorial service was officiated by Rabbi Cheryl Rosenstein of Temple Beth El, in Bakersfield, CA. Stephen was born in Jersey City, NY, to Arthur U. Rosen and Ethel Sheila Marcus Rosen on September 19, 1938. He grew up in Brooklyn, NY. By the time he was 15 years old, he was teaching horseback riding. He was the “Original New York Jewish Cowboy,” which he made them announce whenever he competed at a rodeo. He loved to calf rope, and was the healer. He loved to compete at team penning. Stephen moved to California when he was in his twenties, working at an employment agency, and as a wrangler in the movie industry for more than 30 years. He moved to Tehachapi in 1987, opening a feed store named The Hoof & Paw, on South Street. He still continued to work as a wrangler until an illness forced his retirement in 2006. For the last three years, he was a crossing guard at Golden Hills Elementary. The children brightened his day. He is survived by “the love of his life,” Claudia Blodget. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Peter G. Rosen.
